The Rules of Ultralight

  1. Every item earns its place — if it hasn't been used on the last 3 trips, leave it
  2. Multi-use items — a pot is a mug, a buff is a hat, trekking poles are tent poles
  3. Wear your heaviest clothes — boots, trousers, jacket don't count in base weight
  4. Never sacrifice safety for weight — first aid, navigation and emergency shelter are non-negotiable
  5. Lighter is a privilege, not a right — you need experience to know what you can safely leave behind

The Ultralight Mindset

Ultralight is not about buying expensive gear. It is about ruthlessly evaluating what you carry. Every item must earn its place. Ask three questions: Do I need this? Can something I already carry do this job? Is there a lighter alternative?

The biggest weight savings come from the Big Three: shelter, sleep system, and pack. Get these under 2kg total and your base weight drops dramatically.

Safety Warning

Never sacrifice safety for weight. First aid kit, navigation equipment, emergency shelter, and warm clothing are non-negotiable regardless of your base weight target. Ultralight is a privilege earned through experience, not a shortcut for beginners.
