February Gear Picks: Best UK Outdoor Kit This Month

February: The Transition Month

February sits in that awkward gap between deep winter and early spring. The days are getting noticeably longer, but the weather can still be brutal. It's a great time to pick up the last of the winter bargains and start preparing for the season ahead.

1. Softshell Jacket — Around £60-100

As spring approaches, a good softshell becomes your most-worn outdoor layer. More breathable than a hardshell, more weather-resistant than a fleece, and stretchy enough for active movement. Look for one with a DWR finish and wind-resistant panels. Arc'teryx Gamma, Montane Tenacity, and Rab Torque are all excellent choices.

2. Trekking Poles — Around £40-80

If you've never used trekking poles, February — before the spring hiking season — is the time to try. They reduce strain on your knees by up to 25%, improve balance on rough ground, and help with river crossings. Black Diamond Trail, Leki Makalu, and Alpkit ones are all solid options. Look for adjustable, three-section poles with cork or foam grips.

3. Map and Compass Skills Course

Not gear exactly, but February is when many outdoor organisations run their navigation courses ahead of spring. Spending a day learning to use a map and compass properly is the single best investment you can make in your outdoor safety. Check BMC, Mountaineering Scotland, and local outdoor groups for courses near you.

4. Gaiter Replacement — Around £25-50

If your gaiters are held together with hope and duct tape, replace them now. February and March walking means mud, water, and wet vegetation — gaiters keep your lower legs dry and stop debris getting into your boots. Rab Muztag, Outdoor Research Crocodiles, and Berghaus gaiters are all reliable choices.

5. Thermos and Brew Kit Upgrade — Around £20-40

There's nothing better on a cold February walk than a hot drink at the summit. If your flask is past its best (losing heat after a couple of hours), upgrade to a modern vacuum flask. Stanley, Thermos, and Zojirushi all make excellent options. Add a titanium mug and some decent tea bags and your lunch stops become a highlight.

February half-term is a popular time for family walks. If you're getting kids into the outdoors, invest in proper children's waterproofs and boots — cold, wet kids become miserable kids become kids who hate walking.
