Is It Worth It?
Carrying 3.4kg base weight vs 10kg base weight is a fundamentally different experience. You walk faster, walk further, hurt less, and enjoy more. But it requires:
- Experience to know what you can safely leave behind
- Care with lighter, more fragile equipment
- Acceptance that comfort is sometimes compromised
- A significant financial investment
Our view: Ultralight is brilliant but it's an end point, not a starting point. Build experience with budget gear, understand your needs, then invest in premium ultralight selectively. The sleeping mat and bag should be your first premium purchases — they make the biggest difference to both weight and enjoyment.

Premium Ultralight Investment
A complete premium ultralight kit costs 1,500-2,500 pounds. This is significant money, but spread over hundreds of nights of use, the cost-per-night is low. More importantly, the weight savings transform the hiking experience: faster movement, less fatigue, greater range, and more enjoyment.
The Diminishing Returns Curve
The first 3kg of weight savings (from traditional to lightweight) cost 200-400 pounds. The next 2kg (lightweight to ultralight) costs 500-1,000 pounds. The final 1kg (ultralight to premium ultralight) costs 500-1,000 pounds. The returns diminish sharply. Most people get the best value stopping at standard ultralight (sub-5kg base weight).
